Tips for planning an 80s-inspired disco
While everyone has their personal unpopular opinion on Stranger Things, we can all agree that it’s made everyone nostalgic for the 80s - particularly those who missed it entirely. From the glory of the perm to the near-blinding neon spandex outfits, the 80s were a moment!
If you’re ready to party like it’s 1985, read on for our top tips for planning an 80s-inspired disco.
Set the tone
This is a decade that was all about excess and indulgence. To truly capture the essence of the 80s, you need to go big or go home. Think early-techno lights, a disco ball, chrome finishes, and plenty of sequins. Consider having a highlight reel of iconic 80s pop culture moments playing in the background for everyone new to the flashy era.
Create a dress code guide
From preppy to punk rock, you’ve got options! Key wardrobe staples include skinny jeans, colourful spandex leggings, off-the-shoulder tops, slouchy sweaters, acid wash jeans, loose button-down shirts with rolled-up sleeves, fanny packs, and leather jackets. Throw in some big hair, leg warmers, headbands and statement jewellery, and your dress code is set.
Go neon!
From outfits to decor, nothing screams 80’s like a rainbow explosion of neon. Go retro with neon posters and streamers, or set up a black light and hand out glow-in-the-dark accessories or body paint to guests.
Turn up the beat
There are a few essential tracks and artists that defined the 80s. Dust off your digital boombox with some vintage Madonna, Michael Jackson, a bit of Wham, and the one and only Prince as a start. And no 80s playlist would be complete without 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' by the great Cyndi Lauper.
Whip up an 80s feast
The 80s was a time of skewered foods. From meat to fruit, if it could fit on a stick, that’s where it went! Other party food favourites include deviled eggs, mini quiches, a cheese and cracker charcuterie board, the beloved prawn cocktail, and many colourful jelly desserts.
