Part 5 - The Process Of Moving All Your Questions Answered
Choosing the correct storage unit for you
If you are moving, renovating or just want to unclutter your home then self storage is a great solution. But be aware there are various types and qualities of self storage! Many of the new players in the market are developing single story facilities located on the urban edge (termed first or second generation facilities) and have small reception areas, without offering any packaging or ancillary sales. This is in keeping with the largely fragmented self storage market in South Africa. However larger operators are starting to develop modern multi-storey facilities that offer a range of services and are located in the heart of CBD areas or close to major intersections. The benefit of storing at a facility like this, which is well located (close to or in a residential neighbourhood or your place of work) is that it becomes an extension of your home; it is close, convenient, safe and secure. This type of self storage facility is normally more expensive than a poorly constructed industrial type operation in an industrial node or on the urban edge. However the benefits outweigh the positives. You should check to ensure that the self storage facility you are going to use offers the following:
-
Packaging available
-
Van hire
-
Free use of trolleys on site
-
Automatic monthly billing
-
Access controlled entry
-
CCTV cameras
-
Onsite security
It is also important to visit the self storage facility to assess the premises. A facility that has a well maintained lawn or garden area, is kept clean and feels secure is more likely to be looked after and is a place where you will feel secure in leaving your valuables.
Before you start packing up for big move day, take a minute to go through these tips, they will save you a lot of time and money
Get the right unit size. Most stores have helpful and friendly managers that will be able to quickly and easily recommend the correct unit size for your needs. There is no need to pay for a large unit when you don't need all that space. Similarly if you require access to your goods frequently then a larger space will be more beneficial so you can pack boxes with aisles. Most customers choose a unit size much larger than they need and end up paying up to 50% more than they should.
-
Pack using uniform boxes. You can get second hand boxes cheaper but these will end up costing you in the long run, as they break easily and when stacked become soft and will sag, causing damage to your items. Some storage companies sell packaging so you can get the correct boxes as well as tape and permanent markers all in one stop.
-
Cover you furniture and mattress. Our managers have too often seen a couch or mattress that has been pulled out of storage after many months, that is no longer usable as it is covered in dust. Purchase a plastic cover to seal your valuables and you won't regret it later.
-
Pack your unit with large items first. This will allow you to pack smaller and lighter items on top and in between the larger items. Ultimately this saves space and ensures you don't damage any goods. A microwave in a box under a fridge is never a good thing.
