Packing Your Self Storage Unit Tips And Hints
Moving your goods into a self storage unit can be made easier by taking note of a few simple tips and hints.
-
Have a plan of how you want the space to to be used. This will allow you to use a smaller unit size and thus decrease your monthly rental
-
Store larger items first as it is easier to manoeuvre them in an empty unit. Once the larger items are packed in your unit you can then store smaller items in the gaps, this will save space
-
Use the space inside the larger items like cupboards and TV cabinets as this is valuable storage space
-
Use boxes of a uniform size so that you can stack the boxes easily.
-
Use the best quality boxes you can and ensure that they are full. Poor quality or half full boxes can bend and will cause them to fall over damaging your items
-
Store the heavier boxes and the bottom and the lighter boxes on top. This will help to prevent the boxes sagging
-
Label each box with the items it contains or the room you want the box to go to. When you move into your new home you can then quickly and easily collect what you are looking for
-
If you are storing a fridge, make sure you leave the door a little open, this will help prevent mold and mildew
-
If you are storing a mattress make sure you use a plastic covering, this will help prevent dust mites and other dirt getting onto and in your mattress
-
The number one tip for anyone using self storage? Throw away what you don't need. If you have not read those magazines in a few months or more then it's time for them to go. Have an extra coffee machine that you will get repaired one day? Now is the time to sell it or give it away.
Packing your self storage unit is also an opportunity for a quick cleanout. Throwing away, selling or donating items you don't need makes it quicker to pack / unpack and saves you money as you will not need a larger self storage unit.
