Organizing Your Home

Being organized helps you save money and time! Getting and keeping your home organized is not as hard as you may think. It takes a some work in the beginning but will be easy to maintain. Here are a few things to remember when you are organizing your home:

Start with getting rid of the all clutter. Don’t go out and buy storage bins, baskets and jars just yet! If you go around your home, you will most likely find items that you don’t use anymore, are broken, have been outgrown, etc. This is a great opportunity to donate some items, toss what cannot be given away or make a few extra Rands by selling some items. Also, don’t forget to tackle that pile of paper that keeps growing! Toss the old brochures, old magazines, junk mail, flyers, etc. Don’t even allow them in your home anymore. The better you are about keeping things out of your home, the less likely things will pile up inside.

Next, is finding a home for every item. One reason things pile up on counters, in living areas and on the floor is, because they don’t have a home! Store like items together and in the room that they will be used in. Whether the home is in a file, storage bin, basket, container or cupboard, make sure it is stored away in a designated place. Next time you go to look for something, you will be able to find is with ease because it is in its place.

Here are a few great tips:

1. Buy some clear plastic containers, and use them to create kits where you store all the items you need for a particular task. For example, you could create craft/paint kit, a bill-paying kit, a manicure kit, and so on. That way, you can easily find everything you need to accomplish that task.

2. Store items by their likeness, colour, alphabetically, and numerically. For example, all cleaning items in one area, all tops by colour, all files placed alphabetically and so on.

3. Labels! Print labels to keep you from forgetting what goes where and/or place them on storage containers that are not transparent.

4. Maintaining is easy, if when you use an item and are finished you place it right back. Also, once or twice a month, take a few minutes out of your day to go around and make sure clutter has not made its way back onto those common areas. If so, make sure you deal with it, right then and there.

Finally, don’t overwhelm yourself or be embarrassed by all the clutter. Organizing an entire home can be done but start with one room at a time. Once you are organized and every item has its home, it will be much easier to maintain, your home will feel peaceful and the spaces will look great.
