Local destinations to explore this holiday season

The pandemic has made international travel more restricted with annual budgets slightly tighter, which means this holiday season will be a little bit different to previous years. Many South Africans will choose to stay within the borders and travel locally instead, taking a short left.

Whether you’re looking for a family day on the beach, a farm town escape or an adventure in the bush,  here are four local destinations to consider exploring this holiday season.

Stellenbosch

Despite its modest size, Stellenbosch is well-known for its rich history, natural beauty, quality restaurants and delicious wine. The town is part of the Cape Winelands region which includes Franschhoek, Paarl, Tulbagh and Wellington. This local destination offers relaxing days in the sun as you marvel at breathtaking views and sip on quality wine. With plenty of accommodation options to choose from, it’s the ideal place to relax for a few days with the airport and beaches not far away.

Port Elizabeth

The Sunshine Coast extends from the end of the Garden Route through to East London. In the middle of the beautiful stretch of coastline is the city of Port Elizabeth, home to several Blue Flag beaches and a number of spectacular game parks, making PE the perfect blend of beach and bush. Known as the ‘Friendly City’ in South Africa, it promises a fun holiday for the whole family.

Cape Town

Cape Town offers a diverse experience that is ideal for travellers of all types. Families, couples, groups of friends and solo travellers alike are sure to find something special in the Mother City. With the chance to hike the famous Table Mountain, soak up the rays on Camps Bay beach and dine at the V&A Waterfront, your Cape Town itinerary will never be short of activities to enjoy.

Umhlanga

Umhlanga has the relaxing ambience of a coastal town while also offering the convenience of an established city. The two main beaches in the area, Umhlanga Beach and La Lucia Beach, promise hours of endless fun for the whole family. Just make sure that you also consider the nearby Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve if you enjoy forests and hiking! It’s also close to the airport, which is great if you are not looking to spend a lot of time travelling to your holiday destination.
