10 tips for storing your household items correctly

Whether you are running out of space because your family is expanding, you’ve taken up a new hobby (or six) or if you are simply looking to declutter, self storage provides a convenient and flexible solution to your space woes.

With an increasing number of South Africans turning to self storage in an effort to better manage their space, we thought it was time to share our top 10 tips on how to declutter your home and make the most out of your self storage unit.

  1. Think like Marie

If you haven’t heard of Marie Kondo by now, here’s a quick recap. Marie pretty much broke the internet with her unusual declutter and organising technique which was broadcast into homes across the world through her Netflix show ‘Tidying Up with Marie Kondo’. Think carefully about all of your household items and if you haven’t used something in a few months, perhaps it is time to let it go. If you really, really can’t let it go then put it into storage. If you visit your self storage unit six months from now and it still hasn’t been used, donate it to charity at the very least!

  1. Think carefully about how much space you need

At Stor-Age we offer over 40 different storage unit sizes and for good reason. Everyone is different and has varied storage requirements, so we aim to offer as many size options as possible. We feel it is important that you only pay for the space you need, so speak to a member of our team and they will guide you through the process to see how much space you actually need. You can also use our handy space estimator tool if you are unsure. If you choose a space that is too big don’t stress, you can simply downsize to a smaller unit at no extra cost.

  1. Storing garden equipment?

If you are storing garden equipment in your self storage unit, make sure they are thoroughly clean before you store them. This will avoid rust and make sure no pests are left behind. For sharper equipment such as forks and spades, pack them in protective gear or bubble wrap to avoid any tears in furniture or other items.

  1. Group your items according to their categories

Remember to pack smartly and in a systemised manner. Categorise all your belongings and then group them accordingly. Draw up an inventory list with the different categories along with a blueprint of where they are located within the unit. Keep the inventory in your self storage unit and remember to update it as you add or remove items.

  1. Label and colour code all boxes

Along with categorising your items, it’s important to label and colour code all boxes so you can easily find what you’re looking for. A good idea is to label each side of the box so that its contents are always visible regardless of how the box is placed in the unit.

  1. Use strong packing materials

Pack your belongings in good quality boxes and fill all boxes to capacity to avoid them from collapsing due to lack of stability. Our stores stock a variety of self storage packaging materials so that you can protect your items. This includes bubble wrap, boxes, tape, padlocks and other useful items.

  1. Winter is coming! Pack according to the season

With a change of season comes a change of clothing. Why clutter your cupboards when you can use your self storage unit as an extension of your wardrobe. Separate your summer and winter clothing and put last season’s items into storage. Our self storage units are clean and dry so you can rest assured your clothing will be looked after.

  1. Storing a fridge or freezer?

Are you storing a fridge or freezer in your self storage unit? If you are, make sure that it is properly dry and stored with its doors open for ventilation. This will stop any mould or rust from forming, keeping them clean and ready for use when you need them again.

  1. Look after your back

Use the complimentary trolleys and lifts in our self storage facilities to move your boxes and other items around as needed. Don’t be a hero!

  1. Avoid rust

Bicycles and other metal items will rust over time if not protected. To prevent rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a proper rust agent and make sure there is no water or moisture on the items. Check these items each time you visit your self storage unit.

So there you have it, 10 tips to help you take your space back.
