Five Things You Shouldn't Put In Self Storage But Probably Do

Good idea, use a self storage unit to store your things. Whether moving home, downscaling, upscaling, for business stock, for sports equipment or just to get a little extra room. Using a self storage unit can be helpful as a short term or long term solution to your space requirements.

Bad idea, use a self storage unit to store these things.

1. Magazines
Many of the self storage units we have opened contain magazines. These are not likely to be read again and are difficult to move. Paper is heavy and magazines are large stacks of paper. Save yourself the time and effort of having to box them, carry them and store them. Use that box for something else you should be keeping.

2. DSTV decoder
Ever tried to sell a decoder? You will soon find they have little to no value. That's because there are constant improvements to the system. If you are moving and need to store for a short time then keeping your decoder is a good idea. If you are going to keep the storage for a long time then give your decoder to a friend who can use it. Who knows, maybe they will help you move?

3. Clothing
Keeping seasonal clothing in storage is a good idea. Your closest space can be freed up from storing large jackets, scarves, gloves and other warm clothing. What is not a good idea is to put all the old shoes and clothing that you don't really wear anymore into storage. Save space in your storage unit and donate the clothing to good will. Not only will you be helping charity but you will save yourself the effort of carrying all the extra clothing and save on rent as you will need a smaller storage space.

4. Broken kitchen appliances
"We will get the coffee maker that you bought me for my birthday repaired tomorrow." Only tomorrow has been happening for the last few years. While broken kitchen appliances can often be repaired you need to be realistic about what you are going to do. If you have not fixed it while it was in your home you are even less likely to get the repair done when the item is in self storage. Time to throw it away or give it to someone who will get the repair done.

5. Anything you have not used in a year
It should be a rule of thumb in your house to help you declutter. If you have not used it in a year then it is time to go. You can do this with all sorts of things in your home, including books, clothing, sports equipment and toys. Moving old things out makes way for new things and helps to ensure you don't live a cluttered life.

All though each of these items seems small they do add up. When you have a collection (or worse), all of these in your self storage unit, you may find that there is not enough space for the things you really need to store. By getting rid of these items you will save money on packing them, transporting them and storing them. You can rent a smaller unit too and that puts money back into your pocket.
