Tips to decorate your home for the festive season

For many, the festive season is a time for merriment, traditions, and relaxing with friends and family. While some families use all of their will power to wait until December to put up their decorations, others are already up.

If you are planning to decorate your home this festive season, here are a few tips to get you started.

Use seasonal scents

There are certain smells that are synonymous with the festive season. These include cinnamon, gingerbread and pine to name a few. To make your home extra festive, try dropping scented essential oils in candles and dotting them around the house.

Paper wreath

Give the used paper from your time spent homeschooling a second purpose and create a paper wreath. Bring out the coloured crayons and pair of scissors, and follow a choice of instructions which can easily be found on the internet. A quick search will bring up plenty of options.

Repurposed mason jars

Mason jars are a DIY enthusiast’s best friend. There are so many DIY decorations to spruce up your home this festive season. You can fill your mason jar with a decorated pine branch, insert a candle and wrap a ribbon, or fill it with cotton-wool snow and some figurines.

Dinner table settings

The dinner table is a place for conversation and laughter and is the perfect space to add extra festive cheer. Use colour-coordinated napkins and cutlery, particularly in the traditional red and green. Sprinkle a few pinecones, place as many candles as you can and spend a bit of time making handmade name cards.

Go vertical

Don’t forget about the walls and ceilings in your home, and how they can be used to add a bit of colour. Beams on a staircase and hooks on the wall make for the perfect spot to tie a red bow or hang a wreath.

Clear out space - before and after

When decorating your home, it can quickly become cluttered. Make an effort to clear out space before you begin putting up your decorations. If you don’t have space to keep your home clutter-free, then you can rent a small storage unit to keep your items safe and secure.

Once the festive season has passed and the new year begins, you’ll have to face reality and pack your cheerful decor away. A self storage unit can offer the perfect space for you to store your festive decor while you wait for next year to roll around.  Call 0861 18 18 18 to find out more about our conveniently located units, or get a quote online.
