Tumi's Idea Wins R10 000
Excellence and sustainability are two of our core values at Stor-Age. We believe that upholding these standards is not only the responsibility of the leadership team, but that of every person involved in the daily operations who contributes to and shapes the company’s growth.
Innov-Age is a project that was recently introduced to include all staff members in pushing the boundaries of excellence. We asked our entire team, at all our self storage stores nationwide, to submit a practical idea on how they would improve the customer experience at each store. The top two ideas would then be implemented and a reward given to the winners.
A panel of judges reviewed hundreds of entries, narrowing the entries down to a list of the top ten. The top ten entrants then presented their ideas, taking the judges through their thinking behind the concept, discussing how it would be implemented in store, and why they believed it would further improve the experience for our clients.
The top ten was then narrowed down to a top five. We travelled to each store where the top five innovators work, for another interview. They were given the opportunity to further explain their idea, its reasoning, and its practical execution.
A video was created from these interviews and insights, and then circulated to all staff members to share the details of the top five innovative ideas. Staff members voted for who they believed should win and the top two winners were chosen after counting the votes.
Tumi Lebelo, the Operations Assistant at the Stor-Age Brooklyn store, had the winning idea which he named ‘Eng-Age’. The heart behind his innovation is for the store staff to familiarise themselves with their clients through an information pop-up that is connected to the client’s entry tag. This will provide the store a platform to better engage with the client, understand the client’s storage needs and make them feel important. This winning idea rewarded Tumi a cash prize of R10,000.
Second place was awarded to Johannes Kwayani whose focus was also on prioritising the client experience. His idea was to reward long-term clients with “something special” such as online shopping vouchers or discounted rental rates, as a way of acknowledging their long-term support. Johannes, who is an Access and Site Controller in Midrand, won R5,000 for this innovative idea.
These ideas presented by our innovative staff highlights the priority to think outside of the box, create new ideas, and translate these ideas into an effective service and offering. By setting ourselves ahead of the curve through innovation, we constantly strive to maintain our position as leaders of the self storage industry in Southern Africa.
